spire of fayt project

this project page is about spire of fayt, an art roleplaying game i'm developing using the MIT-licensed lorekeeper framework made in laravel.

lorekeeper is a framework made and maintained by a community specifically for the purpose of art roleplaying games. these often play similarly to pet sites, along the lines of neopets or flight rising, but with the addition that characters are generally created by users rather than auto-generated, and that the gameplay focus and way you "level" your characters is generally via writing or art.

i have been involved in the art roleplaying game (henceforth shortened to ARPG) space since 2016, and have been developing the world for my own since 2018. originally, most of these games were run via deviantART in groups, but since deviantART implemented the eclipse layout, many of them have made the shift either to custom-made websites or to games made with the lorekeeper framework.

for this game i have commissioned both art (the logo and background assets) and custom code work (for changes to an existing extension), but largely i am the sole developer. i've had to learn a lot about php and laravel and some javascript, which were otherwise very out of my wheelhouse until i began the project. i exclusively used brackets for writing code prior to this project (and before that, just base notepad), but starting this project required me to learn how to use VSCode and how to read incoming changes and handle complex merges, as well as how to discard changes or abandon merges when i mess up, how to test on local first, and just generally how to read git history. i feel a lot more competent approaching other technical-related tasks since learning how to merge extensions and make my own changes to lorekeeper's framework, fingers crossed that some day i can find the confidence to make something myself from scratch!
